Prioritize Our Climate Legacy
Around the country, League of Women Voters actively promotes protecting our planet from the physical, economic, and public health effects of climate change while also providing pathways to economic prosperity.
climate action iN THURSTON COUNTY
The Thurston League has been taking action in Thurston County based on the National and State position: Support climate goals and policies that are consistent with the best available climate science and that will ensure a stable climate system for future generations.
We have been working to mitigate the harm done by past policies and practices that did not account for or ignored climate change by:
- Informing members about and encouraging support for the Thurston Climate Mitigation Plan adoption and goal attainment.
- Addressing environmental injustice and differential impacts on marginalized groups through our equity efforts.
- Partnering with the Thurston Climate Action Team on much of their work to bring our community together to reduce climate disruption.
WATER IN THURSTON COUNTY
Our League believes that protecting the quantity and quality of our water is of paramount importance to a healthy future. More than 300,000 residents of Thurston county depend on the freshwater resources we have today. These resources are finite. They will never increase, and may even decline, yet our county's population is projected to grow by 30% by 2045. Water use by each person must be reduced!
Water is essential for agriculture, fish populations, other industries, recreation, and human health. How can we ensure adequate supplies? Only if we take these three actions:
- Manage existing water resources with great care
- Avoid reducing the water supply through pollution or waste
- Create incentives to reduce water use per capita
